Aa = a in “father”

Áá = aw in “saw”

Bb = b in “big”

Cc = k in “kite” before “a,” “o,” “u,” or “á,” and = ch in “loch” before “e” or “i”

Dd = d in “dog”

Dh (as in “dhá”) = th (A soft “th” sound like “gh” in “ghost”)

Ee = eh in “bed”

Éé = ay in “say”

Ff = f in “fish”

Fh = (f)h  (it’s used to indicate lenition (aspiration) of the following consonant (“fear” (man) → “fhear” and “puc” (push) → “phuc”)

Gg = g in “go” before “a,” “o,” “u,” or “á,” and = y in “yes” before “e” or “i” 

Hh = h in “hello”

Ii = ee in “tree”

Íí = ee in “tree”

Ll = l in “light”

Mm = m in “moon”

Nn = n in “no”

Oo = o in “go”

Óó = oh in “go”

Pp = p in “pen”

Rr = r (a rolled “r” sound)

Ss = s in “sun”

Tt = t in “top”

Uu = oo in “food”
