А (a) = a in “father.”

Ә (ä) = a in “cat” with a slightly more open mouth.

В (v) = v

Г (g) = g in “go.”

Ғ (ǵ) = A voiced velar fricative sound, similar to the French “r” in “Paris”

Д (d) = d

Е (e) = y in “yes.”

Ё (yo) = yo in “yogurt”

Ж (j) = zh as “s” in “measure”

З (z) = z

И (i) = ee in “see.”

І (ı) = i in “bit.”

Й (y) = y in “yes”

К (k) = k

Қ (q) = q (A voiceless velar fricative sound, similar to the Arabic “qaf.”)

Ң (ń) =  ng (A nasalized sound, ng in “sing”)

О (o) – Similar to the English “o” in “go.”

Ө (ö) = o (Similar to the German “ö” in “nötig.”)

Р (r) = r (Rolled “r” sound, similar to the Spanish “rr” in “perro.”)

Ф (f) – Same as the English “f.”

Х (x) = ch as “Bach” in Germany

Ш (sh) = sh in “shoe.”

Щ (shch) = A combination of “sh” and “ch” sounds.

Ъ (‘) = A hard sign used to indicate a slight pause in pronunciation.

Ы (ı) = Similar to the Russian “ы” or a throaty “i” sound.

Ь (‘) = A soft sign used to indicate palatalization.
