അ (a) = a in “car.”

ആ (aa) = a in “father.”

ബ (ba) = b in “book.”

ഭ (bha) = bha (Similar to the ‘bha’ sound in Hindi that represents the voiced aspirated bilabial sound. It’s pronounced like the English ‘b’.)

ച (cha) = ch in “cheese.”

ഛ (chha) = chha sound like ‘chh’ in “chhaya” (a Hindi word).

ദ (da) = d in “dog.”

ധ (dha) = dh sound in “this.”

ഡ (ḍa) = d (a retroflex ‘d’ with the tongue curled back.)

ഢ (ḍha) = dh (ḍh’ sound in Hindi.)

എ (e) = e in “bet.”

ഏ (ee) = ay in “say.”

ഗ (ga) = g in “go.”

ഘ (gha) = gh sound similar to the “gh” sound in the French word “lough.”

ഹ (ha) = h in “house.”

ഇ (i) = i in “bit.”

ഈ (ii) = ee in “bee.”

ജ (ja) = j in “judge.”

ഝ (jha) = jh sound in “jhilmil” in Hindi.

ക (ka) = k in “kick.”

ഖ (kha) = kha sound, similar to the “ch” in the Scottish word “loch.”

ക്ഷ (kṣa) = ks as ‘kṣ’ sound, in “akshay” (indestructible).

ല (la) = l in “love.”

ല്ല (lla) = ll (a doubled ‘l’ sound, as in “palla” (stone).)

ള്ള (ḷḷa) = ll (a doubled ‘ḷ’ sound, as in “vaḷḷam” (boat).)

മ (ma) = m in “man.”

ന (na) = n in “net.”

ണ (ṇa) = n (A nasal sound, similar to the ‘n’ in “ink.”)

ങ (nga) = ng (A nasal sound, similar to the ‘ng’ in “sing.”)

ന്ന (nna) = nn (a doubled ‘n’ sound, as in “anna” (elder brother).)

ഞ (nya) = ny (A nasal sound, similar to the ‘ny’ in “canyon.”)

ഞ്ച (ñca) = nyca (A combination of ‘ñ’ and ‘ca’ to form a unique sound.)

ഓ (o) = o in “hot.”

ഔ (oo) = ou in “out.”

ഫ (pha) = ph as ‘pha’ sound in Hindi.

ര (ra) = r in “run.”

റ്റ (ṟṟa) = rr (a doubled ‘ṟ’ sound.)

സ (sa) = s in “see.”

ഷ (ṣa) = s ( A retroflex ‘s’ sound.)

ഥ (tha) = th in “think.”

ഉ (u) = u in “put.”

ഊ (uu) = oo in “pool.”

വ (va) = v in “vine.”

യ (ya) = y in “yes.”
