अ (a) = a in “cup”

आ (aa) = aa in “father”

ऐ (ai) = ai in “bike”

ब (ba) = b in “bat”

भ (bha) = bh (Aspirated “b,” like “bh” in “behave”

च (cha) = ch in “chat”

छ (chha) = chh in “chill”

द (da) = d in “dog”

ड (ḍa) = d in “dog”

ढ (ḍha) = dh (Aspirated “ḍ,” like “ḍh” in “adhere”

ध (dha) = th ( aspirated “d,” like “dh” in “this”)

ए (e) = e in “bed”

ई (ii) = ee in “feet”

ग (ga) = g in “go”

घ (gha) = gh (aspirated in “ghost”

ज्ञ (jña) = dg in “edge” (tongue against roof of mouth.)

ह (ha) = h in “hot”

अः (ahaḥ) = h sound from the throat, as in “aha”

इ (i) = i in “bit”

ज (ja) = j in “jump”

झ (jha) = j  (aspirated “j,” like “jh” in “juggle”

क (ka) = k in “cat”

ख (kha) = k (aspirated as kh in “khaki.” 

ल (la) = l in “love”

म (ma) = m in “man”

न (na) = n in “nut”

ण (ṇa) – Nasal “n,” tongue against roof of mouth

ङ (ṅa) = ng (nasal) as in “song”

अं (aṁ) = ng with nasalization, as in “song”

ञ (ña) = ny in “canyon”

ओ (o) = o in “boat”

औ (au) = ow in “how”

प (pa) = p in “pat”

फ (pha) = ph (Aspirated “p,” like “ph” in “phone”

र (ra) = r in “run”

ऋ (r̥i) = ri (a unique Marathi sound, similar to “ri” but pronounced with the tongue curled back)

स (sa) = s in “sit”

श (sha) = sh in “shut”

ष (ṣa) = sh (sound with tongue against roof of mouth.)

त (ta) = t in “tap”

ट (ṭa) = t in “top”

ठ (ṭha) = t (aspirated th in “butter”

थ (tha) – t (Aspirated “t,” like “th” in “thin”)

त्र (tra) = tr in “tree”

उ (u) u =  in “put”

ऊ (uu) = oo in “boot”

व (va) = v in “vat”

क्ष (kṣa) = x in “box”

य (ya) = y in “yes”
