In linguistics, approximately 400 orthographies exist today. Each orthography can be classified as alphabetic, such as English, etc, or non-alphabetic, such as Chinese, etc. Alphabetic languages are easier to pronounce than non-alphabetic languages. However, there are still some exceptions (irregularities of spelling vs sound) and (shallow orthography vs deep orthography) in these languages.
