Ә ә = a (Similar to the vowel sound in “cat.”)

Б б = b in “bat.”

Ч ч = ch in “cheese.”

Д д = d in “dog.”

Э э = e in “bet.”

И и = ee in “see.”

Ф ф = f in “fish.”

Г г = g in “go.”

Һ һ = h in “hello.”

Ы ы = i (Similar to the vowel sound in “bit.”)

К к = k in “kite.”

Х х = kh in the Scottish “loch.”

Л л = l in “love.”

М м = m in “mother.”

Н н = n in “nice.”

Ң ң = ng as in “sing.”

О о = o in “more.”

У у = oo in “food.”

Ө ө = ir (Similar to the vowel sound in “bird.”)

П п = p in “pen.”

Р р = r in “red.”

С с = s in “snake.”

Ж ж = zh as “s” in “measure.”

Ш ш = sh in “shoe.”

Щ щ = Similar to “shch” in “fresh cheese” (not found in all Tatar dialects).

Т т = t in “table.”

Ц ц = ts in “cats.”

Ү ү = u in “blue.”

В в = v in “van.”

Е е = ye in “yes.”

Ё ё = yo in “yogurt.”

Й й = y in “yes.”

Ю ю = yu in “yule.”

Я я = ya in “yard.”

З з = z in “zero.”

Ъ ъ = Hard sign, not pronounced.

Ь ь = Soft sign, indicates palatalization of the preceding consonant.
