What is open reading?

“Open reading”  refers to a more relaxed and flexible approach to reading where the focus is on enjoyment and exploration rather than rigorous analysis or specific learning objectives. It can imply a reader-driven experience where the choice of material and pace is determined by the reader’s interests and preferences.

“Open reading” can be considered similar to Stephen Krashen’s concept of “pleasure reading” or “free voluntary reading.” Both approaches emphasize reading for enjoyment and personal interest, without the pressure of detailed analysis or specific learning goals. The main idea is that when individuals read what they find interesting and enjoyable, they naturally improve their reading skills, vocabulary, and overall language proficiency. This aligns with Krashen’s belief that pleasure reading is a key component in language acquisition and literacy development.
