Yuan-xiao-jie is celebrated at the fifteenth day of the first Chinese lunar month. Yuan-xiao-jie marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. Yuan-xiao-jie is also the first time to see a full moon of that year in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. During Yuan-xiao-jie, most people enjoy various paper lanterns and folk art performances. The most important celebration of Yuan-xiao-jie is to eat special rice balls 元宵 (Yuan-Xiao in northern China) and 汤圆 (Tang-yuan in the southern part of China). Tang-yuan or Yuan-xiao is a glutinous rice ball filled with a variety of fillings, meaning reunion, harmony and happiness for the family. Yuan-xiao-jie started as early as the Qin Dynasty and became a festival in Western Han Dynasty in Chinese history.
